Enhancing National Reputation & Impact

Building A Better World For Children

Children represent our most vulnerable population — entirely dependent on adults for decisions affecting their living conditions, nutrition, safety, and access to health care and education. As stewards of Whole Child Health, we bear responsibility to actively shape the systems and environments that impact children’s well-being both within and beyond our walls.

Advancing Children’s Health Nationwide

Our commitment drives us to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, advancing evidence-based practices and policies at the national level to ensure children across the U.S. can achieve optimal health. By setting high standards of care — including supporting those who provide that care — influencing legislation, and sharing knowledge through global platforms, we work to transform children’s health for generations to come.

Visibility For Hidden Helpers

Supporting Our Nation’s Military Families

In June, we co-hosted an event with former U.S. Senator Tom Carper (Delaware) and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation honoring military families and “hidden helpers.” Military-connected children and spouses shared their insights alongside leaders from the military, early childhood, health care, education, and government sectors who participated in moderated conversations and panel discussions to showcase what is possible when we collaborate to serve military families.

Teams across Nemours worked with Epic, the nation’s leading electronic medical record developer, to create a prompt that helps providers identify children in military or veteran families during the registration process. This allows care teams to recognize the family’s service and better meet their needs. Our team presented this work at the Children’s Hospital Association leadership meeting to share our experience and encourage children’s hospitals to use the model.

Rhett and Dad

Rhett was 5 years old when he learned a tumor was again growing in his brain stem during a checkup at Nemours Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Jacksonville. Complicating this distressing news, Rhett’s father, John, was out to sea on a mission for the military.

The Fischer family is one of thousands of military families served by Nemours clinical care teams. We’re proud of our commitment to anticipate and respond to the unique needs of our Hidden Helper families.

Our National Office’s Federal Affairs team and their national partners successfully advocated for maternal and infant health priorities, including promoting the MOMS Who Serve Act to establish perinatal mental health prevention programs at military treatment facilities.

New for 2024 is Salute, an associate-led group that celebrates the culture, backgrounds, interests, and aspirations for our military and veteran associates. Members of this group have also played a key role as thought partners to identify and enact strategies that improve care and support of our military-connected patients and associates.

Influencing Policy

Advancing All Children’s Health Nationally

Through our National Office of Policy & Prevention located in Washington, D.C., the Federal Affairs team provides thought leadership and advocacy to support children’s health, well-being, and development for children across the U.S. The team works with Congress, the White House, and national partners on federal policy changes that help create positive conditions for children to grow up healthy.

Congressman Darren Soto and Dr. Larry Moss
R. Lawrence Moss, MD, FACS, FAAP, President and CEO, Nemours Children’s Health, visits U.S. Representative Darren Soto (Florida) on Capitol Hill to discuss the KIDS Health Act and Whole Child Health.

  • Hosted major thought leadership event and secured commitments from partners to deepen work to serve military families
  • Worked with national partners to secure continued funding for residency programs through the Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education program
  • Influenced appropriations for the National Early Child Care Collaboratives program and the Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program
  • Promoted the KIDS Health Act (S. 1769 and H.R. 3805) that would establish a demonstration model at Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to support Whole Child Health through strategic meetings with key legislators
VOT ER

Our National Office of Policy and Prevention, State External Affairs, and Community Engagement teams launched a civic engagement campaign to increase associate and patient family voter participation. The nonpartisan effort focused on increasing voter registration and boosting awareness of how voting helps shape policies that impact health outcomes for children and families.

Championing Workforce Well-Being

Taking Care of Care Teams

For the second time in a row, we have been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Joy in Medicine™ health organization. This prestigious two-year honor reflects our commitment to enhancing physician well-being and addressing burnout.

Nationally-Recognized Efforts to Support a Healthy Workforce

Revolutionizing Clinical Documentation to Refocus on the Experience

A 2023 survey of the American Medical Association revealed 50% of physicians reported experiencing burnout. As part of our commitment to reducing clinician burnout and improving health care delivery, we are deploying systems-level solutions through our Center for Well-being. One of our most recent initiatives is implementing Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot — an AI-powered solution that addresses one of health care’s most burdensome tasks: clinical documentation.

Using the Epic Haiku app, DAX lets physicians record patient visits directly from their smartphones.

DAX filters out small talk and captures only the clinically relevant details, making documentation more efficient and accurate.

With less time spent on post-visit notes, providers can focus fully on their patients while keeping the care team up to date.

To facilitate adoption, our digital transformation team created protected time for physicians to experiment with the technology in low-pressure environments. Nearly 100 physicians across our primary care, specialty services, and telehealth actively use DAX — a number that continues to grow as more clinicians experience its benefits in restoring the human connection at the heart of medical practice.
