Legacy Endowments for Orthopedics

Legacy Endowments for Orthopedics

While gifts of all kinds are essential, endowed funds are crucial because they are permanent funding sources, allowing donors to support causes they care about in perpetuity. Recent endowments at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, will ensure our patients have access to care that remains at the forefront of pediatric orthopedics.

This endowment, part of Mrs. Snyder’s $6.75 million investment in Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, supports specialized care for children with osteogenesis imperfecta and is currently held by pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jeanne M. Franzone.

Held by pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. W. G. Stuart Mackenzie, this endowment provides crucial support for the treatment and research of skeletal dysplasia conditions.

This newly established fund facilitates engagement events promoting collaboration between families, health care professionals, and researchers while addressing psychological and social challenges faced by families of children with special needs.

Established through Lammot du Pont Copeland Jr.’s visionary $3 million gift to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, this endowment will have enduring impact. Named after Copeland’s grandmother, it will permanently link the name Andelot with academic excellence in orthopedics, as represented by Dr. Suken Shah, chair of Orthopedic Surgery.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware: A “Partner” in Medical-Legal Partnership Support

Imagine having trouble paying your rent as a single parent returning to school to further your career. One of our patient families faced this scenario, and an eviction hearing was scheduled in short order. During a timely appointment for their child, the parent completed one of 54,000 routine social needs assessments we conduct each year. On it, the family indicated they were in jeopardy of losing their apartment.

Their openness about the eviction hearing led to a referral to our Medical-Legal Partnership, a program made possible through a generous investment from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware’s, Highmark Blueprints for the Community.

Through this partnership, our clinical teams — like doctors and social workers — are trained to identify legal issues that can harm a family’s health. These can include things like housing insecurity, lack of education access, economic struggles, unsafe living conditions or even polluted water. Addressing these legal needs for underserved families is part of our commitment to providing care that goes well beyond medicine.

In this case, attorneys reviewed our patient family’s eviction notice and discovered it didn’t comply with local laws. The case was dismissed — and the parent was able to keep their home.

“We are honored to support the new ENT center, which will offer children access to state-of-the-art technology and exceptional physician care.”

— Lisa Demetree, Director of the Demetree Foundation

ENT disorders are among the most common health issues in children, leading to around 30 million doctor visits each year. Early care is key — especially for hearing loss, which, if left untreated, can impact a child’s development, learning, and emotional well-being.

As the region’s largest cochlear implant program, our Jacksonville team cares for more children with hearing loss than any provider in Northeast Florida. Recognized for our expertise, we’re the top referral center for complex pediatric ENT cases. With generous support from the Demetree Foundation, we’re continuing our mission to give every child the gift of sound.
